Float On
Chapter Twenty-One
Adriem had been out since before sunrise, cutting more wood for the add on to the house that he had begun across the hall from his own room. It had been coming along nicely and had been a wonderful project for all of us to pitch in and help with the past few days. Especially Charlotte and Ronan, who loved the excuse to put off the studies Olivia had started with them.
I personally wasn't much of a builder, or particularly crafty, but I adored watching Charlotte as she carried out Adriem's instructions. The previous day he had tasked her with sanding logs he had cut into thick planks, and my baby girl had spent hours with her tiny nose crinkled in concentration; it was a much better way to spend the day over the hours of screen time we had gotten used to back in the states. And there was none of that here, Adriem didn't allow televisions in the house, and it's not like cellphones would have reception this far out in the middle of nowhere.
When Adriem strode into the house there was ordered mayhem with everyone crowded in the kitchen cooking, chatting, drinking coffee, and running around screaming if you were under a certain age... or maybe not, Dev was doing a lot of the chasing. The kitchen was in utter chaos in the mornings. Perfection.
âNeed a hand with anything?â Adriem asked, as I rolled out the dough for the morning bread while he washed his hands in the sink.
His wild hair was stiff with salt and sweat, making it stick up in awkward directions, gold glinted as sunrays snuck in through the kitchen window. Adriem was the essence of summer.
âYeah, thanks.â I nodded at the mixing bowl on the opposite counter. âCan you crack like, all the eggs in there.â I laughed as I tried to calculate exactly how much food we would need to make for the ten people currently living in the middle of nowhere in the Western Chinese hillsides. âAlso, weâll be out of eggs after breakfast.â I bit my lip and gave him a pleading smile, really not wanting to be the one to make the long trip to the city. âAnd pretty much everything else... â
âWeâll have to make some extra food,â Adriem beamed and started cracking the eggs into the mixing bowl. âDid you sense your dad? Heâll be here soon.â
As much as my father hated Adriem, I was always surprised to see how happy Rogueâs father was to see him. Maybe Vero just hated everyone.
âYeah,â I rolled my eyes and scanned the counters with all the different breakfast projects Adeline and I had started.
Sliced fruits, vegetables ready to be sautéed, fresh bread ready to go into the oven, scrambled eggs, and thick slabs of bacon from a wild boar Dev and Rogue had caught while hunting.
âCan I do the veggies?â Olivia asked as she came up beside me. She wore yet another dress she had crafted from one of the menâs shirts.
